Frequently Asked Questions
A doula is a trained professional who provides continuous physical, emotional, and informational support to their client before, during, and shortly after childbirth to help them achieve the healthiest, most satisfying experience possible.
Doulas nurture, support and offer expert guidance for families during their pregnancy, birth and the early postpartum time. There is incredible evidence that shows how birth doulas improve outcomes!
According to a 2017 Cochrane Database Systematic Review, “Continuous support in labor may improve a number of outcomes for both [the birthing person] and baby, and no adverse outcomes have been identified. Continuous support from a person who is present solely to provide support, is not a member of the [person’s] own network, is experienced in providing labor support, and has at least a modest amount of training (such as a doula), appears beneficial.”
Please see more information here.
A doula does not take the place of your partner. I support the birthing person and their partner with skills, knowledge, and experience. Your partner/support person will be included in every step of your journey, depending on your preferences.
A doula can support you in any stage of your pregnancy, but early contact allows you enough time to explore your options for the best birthing experience. I support families from pre-conception up until the first year postpartum.
A doula is not a substitute for a midwife, doctor, or other healthcare professional. We cannot offer medical advice. Midwives provide medical care for you during pregnancy, birth, and the immediate postpartum period. Doulas provide you and your family with emotional, informational, and physical support during pregnancy, birth and the immediate postpartum period.
